​Advanced Care Technician Scope of Practice​​

Certified Advanced Care Technician may perform all procedures and administer all medications contained in the current 5000 series WV EMS System Protocols.

All Intermediate level drugs and procedures require contact with Medical Command or the Medical Command Physician prior to performance except for establishment of an IV or in extreme cases such as certain cardiac arrest or airway management procedures.

If contact with Medical Command is not possible, ONLY the following specific procedures may be carried out to save life or reduce morbidity:

  • ​SQ Epinephrine
  • SL Nitroglycerin
  • IV D50w or D25W
  • IM Glucagon
  • Albuterol aerosol
  • Needle decompression of tension pneumothorax in a non-awake patient
Advanced Care Technician may also perform any procedure or administer any drug contained in the current 6000 (EMT-B), 7000 (First Responder) or 9000 (Special Operational) series protocols.

Advanced Care Technician must have current practice privileges at a licensed West Virginia EMS Advanced Life Support (ALS) Agency to perform this Scope of Practice.
